Engines are a lot more efficient today than they were 20 or 30 years ago. Sure, there have been mechanical advancements that have helped, but what really increased efficiency was the addition of computer controls. By measuring the density of the air, temperature of the air, temperature of the engine, and content of the oxygen left over after combustion, the computer can calculate the optimal air-to-fuel ratio for the best efficiency possible. The 2002 Dodge Dakota uses a temperature sensor to monitor the temperature of the air, just before it enters the combustion chamber.
The intake air temperature sensor on the 3.9-liter V-6 is mounted in the intake manifold, just behind the alternator.
