Which Is the Number One Piston on a 1998 Toyota Corolla?

In 1998, Toyota completely revised the Corolla, introducing the eighth generation of the compact sedan. With this redesign came an all-new, 1.8-liter engine to replace the base 1.6-liter and optional 1.8-liter engines of the previous generation. This new engine added 20 horsepower over the previous generation's base 1.6-liter engine, and 15 horsepower over the optional 1.8-liter. On top of the extra power, this engine also delivered better fuel economy than the engines it replaced.

Finding the No. 1 Cylinder

  • The No. 1 piston on the 1.8-liter engine in the 1998 Corolla is the cylinder on the far passenger side of the engine. If the engine is out of the vehicle, then the No. 1 cylinder is the front-most cylinder -- the one closest to the accessory pulleys.
