On the 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier with the 2.2-liter engine, the function of the ignition control module is to control spark to the spark plugs by controlling the two coil packs mounted to the module. The module also communicates signals from the crankshaft position sensor to the powertrain control module in order to control the firing times of the fuel injectors. The ignition control module is located on the left side of the engine, on the end of the cylinder head.
Mark the position of the two coils mounted to the module with a piece of tape. Remove the two attaching coil packs with the ratchet, extension, and socket set, leaving the spark plug wires attached. Disconnect the two electrical connectors on the ignition module and remove the bolts attaching the module to the engine block. Remove the ignition module from the engine.
Clean the module mounting points. Inspect the two coils for any cracks. If any cracks are found, the coil will need to be replaced. Any cracks or holes in the coil assembly could send a spark into the module, which could cause it to burn out.
Install the control module to the engine block and torque the mounting bolts to 15 to 22-foot pounds with a torque wrench. Install the coil pack assemblies onto the ignition module, and torque the mounting bolts to 40-inch pounds. Install the electrical connectors to the module.
Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature. Watch for sparks arcing from the coil pack assembly.
