How to Change the Headlamp Bulb on a 1997 Blazer

In 1983, the S-10 Blazer debuted as a smaller alternative to the full-size Blazer. In 1994, Chevy dropped the “S-10” prefix, as the full-size Blazer became the Tahoe. Just a year later, the Blazer received a full overhaul that gave it a more aerodynamic look. This new aerodynamic look included two different front fascia setups; one setup used a large sealed-beam headlight while the other used a composite setup with a small headlight bulb. Replacing either style of headlight on your 1997 Blazer is fairly simple.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • New No. H4666 headlight (sealed beam)
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • New No. 9006 headlight bulb (low beam)
  • New No. 9005 headlight bulb (high beam)

Sealed Beam Headlights

  • Remove the headlight-retaining ring around the headlight, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the headlight from the front of your Blazer and unplug the wiring harness from the back of the headlight.

  • Plug the wiring harness into the rear of the new No. H4666 headlight and position the retaining ring around the new headlight.

  • Guide the new headlight and retaining ring onto the front of the Blazer and tighten the retaining ring screws until they are snug.

Composite Headlights

  • Open the hood and remove the two rubber plugs on the upper radiator support – the metal bar that spans the front of the engine compartment – just above the headlight assembly by prying them out with a flat-head screwdriver. This exposes the two headlight-retaining pins.

  • Remove the headlight-retaining pins with a ratchet and socket, and pull the headlight assembly from the front of the vehicle just far enough to access the dual bulbs on its backside. Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it and pull it from the headlight assembly. Lift up on the locking tab on the headlight bulb wiring harness and unplug the wiring harness from the bulb.

  • Hold a new headlight bulb – No. 9006 for the low beam or No. 9005 for the high beam – by its plastic base, as touching the glass part of the bulb can cause the bulb to burn out prematurely. Plug the wiring harness into the new headlight bulb until the harness clicks into place. Guide the bulb into the headlight assembly and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.

  • Guide the headlight assembly into its bed in tighten the retaining pins until they are snug. Press the rubber plugs back into the radiator support and close the Blazer’s hood.
