Where Is the Starter Solenoid on a 2006 Honda Odyssey?

The starter solenoid on the 2006 Honda Odyssey is connected to the starter motor and base. In general, when replacing the starter solenoid, the starter motor also is replaced as one whole assembly. The starter is mounted to the top of the transmission case and can be accessed from the topside of the engine compartment. To access the starter, you must remove the battery and battery tray. Before the battery is disconnected, retrieve the radio security code from the owner's manual or from "radio-navicode.honda.com".

Things You'll Need

  • Battery wrench
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • New starter assembly
  • Torque wrench

Removal

  • Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Ensure you have the radio security code before continuing. Document the radio presets on a piece of paper. If you do not have the radio security code, Honda offers an online code retrieval system, using your vehicle identification number, personal data -- phone number and ZIP code -- and the radio's serial number.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with the battery wrench. Disconnect the positive battery cable with the battery wrench.

  • Remove the battery hold-down bracket bolt with the socket and ratchet. Remove the battery hold-down from the vehicle. Remove the battery from the vehicle.

  • Remove the three bolts securing the battery tray to the vehicle with the socket and ratchet. Remove the battery tray from the vehicle.

  • Remove the clamp securing the starter wire to the wiring harness. Remove the nut securing the starter cable to the starter solenoid, with the socket and ratchet. Unplug the black and white wire from the starter solenoid. Set both wires aside.

  • Remove the two bolts securing the starter to the transmission housing with the socket and ratchet. Remove the starter from the transmission housing.

Installation

  • Install the starter onto the transmission housing. Place the longer mounting bolt on the motor side and the shorter bolt on the solenoid side of the starter assembly. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 47 foot-pounds, with the socket and ratchet.

  • Connect the starter cable to the solenoid terminal labeled "B". Install the retaining nut and tighten to 7 foot-pounds with the torque wrench. Do not overtighten or the starter solenoid will be damaged. Plug the black and white wire into the terminal on the starter solenoid.

  • Set the battery tray in place and install the battery tray mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts with the socket and ratchet.

  • Set the battery onto the battery tray. Install the battery hold-down and tighten the hold-down bolts with the socket and ratchet.

  • Install the positive battery cable and tighten it to the terminal with the battery wrench. Install the negative battery cable, and tighten with the battery wrench.

  • Start the vehicle to ensure the starter works properly. There may be an initial grind as the starter gear may be slightly out of alignment with the flywheel.

  • Input the radio security code using numbered preset keys on the radio. Reset all of the radio presets and set the clock to the correct time. Shut off the engine. Shut the vehicle hood.
