How to Remove a Pajero Barrel Lock

If the key cannot be removed or turned into the "Start" position in the ignition cylinder in your Mitsubishi Pajero, you likely will need to replace the mechanism. Over time, the springs in the lock that push the tumbler pins against the key can break down and fail. This failure will require replacement with a new barrel rather than a repair. There is no need to take your Pajero to the dealer, though; this one you can do yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Place the transmission lever into "Park" for automatic transmissions, or in neutral with the parking brake applied for manual transmissions.

  • Remove the lower steering column cover. Using a Philips screwdriver, loosen and remove the screws that hold the plastic cover in place on the underside of the steering column to provide access to the underside of the ignition cylinder.

  • Insert the ignition key into the cylinder, if it isn't already there, and switch it into the accessory position, marked "ACC." This will require one turn counter clockwise from the "Off" position.

  • Locate and push in a small button on the underside of the ignition cylinder. While the button is depressed, pull outward on the ignition key until the barrel is removed. Replace with a new, functioning barrel in the opposite order as removal.
