How to Soak-Up an Oil Spill

If you are changing the oil of your car or truck and happen to spill it or if a visiting automobile leaves a stain on your driveway, there is no need to panic. Instead, with a few basic household items, you can clear away the oil spill. Cleaning up an oil spill is important because unattended oil can leach into the environment, damaging your lawn or even get into the water supply.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid soap
  • Water
  • Rags or old towels
  • Scrub brush
  • Wipe up as much as oil as you can can with old rags or towels.

  • Squirt liquid soap on the leftover spill. The soap will emulsify the oil. Spray the area with water and scrub it with a scrub brush. Do not use a wire brush since it can ruin your driveway.

  • Rinse with clean water. Add more water if you see a rainbow of colors while you are rinsing.
