How to Remove the Resonator on a Camry

The Camry is mid-side sedan made by the Toyota Motor Corporation. The exhaust system on the Camry both quiets the noise made from the motor and helps reduce fuel emissions. The exhaust system is made up of the muffler, catalytic converter and a resonator. A sign that the resonator is going bad and needs to be replaced is a loud grumbling or gurgling sound coming from the muffler. The resonator on a Camry is located between the muffler and the catalytic converter.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • socket set
  • Open the Camry's hood and slip a wrench around the bolt holding the negative battery cable in place. Loosen that bolt and pull the cable free of the battery's terminal.

  • Park the Camry on a flat surface and engage the emergency brake.

  • Jack up the rear end of the Camry and position jack stands under rear frame on both sides of the rear end. Lower the Camry onto the jack stands.

  • Use the socket set to remove the two bolt clamps that hold the clamp in place that secures the resonator to the exhaust pipe.

  • Take the clamp off by hand and separate the resonator from the exhaust pipe. Pull it apart and down to remove the resonator.
