How to Wire a Chevy Backup Light

The backup lights on modern Chevrolet vehicles are a part of the taillight assembly which includes the brake light and the taillight. The wiring component is a single wiring connector at the rear of the assembly. Wiring the taillight assembly, and by extension the backup light, is fairly simple and should only take about 15 minutes to complete. Because the backup light is an integral component of your Chevy vehicle's safety, you should make sure that it is always in working order.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Open the trunk, rear door, or tailgate of your Chevrolet vehicle. Most taillight assemblies in modern Chevrolet vehicles are secured by a covering panel and two screws that are accessible only through the rear of the vehicle.

  • Remove the two screws from both taillight covering panels on the inboard side of the vehicle, just behind the taillight assemblies.

  • Pry off the covering panel using a slotted screwdriver to allow access to the taillight assembly.

  • Pull the taillight assembly out of the vehicle and locate the wiring connector at the rear of the assembly.

  • Connect the wiring connector to the wiring harness just below the taillight assembly. Make sure that the connector and harness make a clicking noise when connected. The clicking noise indicates that the connection is secure.

  • Place the taillight assembly back into the vehicle and reattach the screws and covering panel. Close the trunk, rear door, or tailgate.
