How Do I Install a Clutch on a 1992 Chevrolet Pickup?

The clutch is composed of a series of plates in your transmission. The clutch plates each have their own gear spacing, which allows for your Chevrolet truck to work in different gears. Over time, the gears on these plates can wear down and not transfer as smoothly from one gear to another. If this is the case, you will have to replace your clutch. Never clean any clutch surfaces with compressed air, as the plate itself contains asbestos.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Holding strap tool
  • Clutch alignment tool
  • Slide-type bearing puller tool
  • Flywheel
  • Clutch plates

Remove the Transmission Assembly

  • Remove the negative terminal of your battery by unscrewing the negative terminal from the negative battery post.

  • Remove the air cleaner assembly by removing the latches that secure it. The air cleaner assembly contains the round air filter.

  • Remove the throttle valve cable from the throttle linkage that has been exposed.

  • Raise up the front of the vehicle. Place jack stands under the vehicle to support it.

  • Remove the bolts securing the driveshaft to the transmission. Remove the driveshaft.

  • Remove all of the wires connected to the transmission by pressing in on their release tabs.

  • Remove the cross member from the transmission by removing the bolts that secure it and then slide it forward out of place.

  • Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.

  • Use a holding strap to hold the torque converter to the transmission.

  • Place a jack stand under the transmission assembly.

  • Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine mounts.

Installing the Clutch

  • Remove the bellhousing surrounding the transmission assembly by removing the bolts that secure it and pulling it out of the rear of the engine assembly.

  • Remove the clutch fork by prying it away from the ball stud.

  • Place a clutch alignment tool into the crankshaft pilot bearing. This will hold the clutch together while you are removing the bolts that secure it.

  • Mark a line down your flywheel, clutch clover, and pressure plate lug so that you know the orientation to reinstall them in.

  • Remove the bolts that secure the pressure plate to the flywheel.

  • Pull off the pressure plate and driven clutch plate.

  • Pull out your clutch alignment tool.

  • Pull off the flywheel.

  • Remove the pilot bearing using a slide-type bearing puller tool.

  • Hammer your new bearing in with a wood hammer.

  • Insert your new flywheel, driven plate and pressure plate.

  • Reinsert your clutch alignment tool.

  • Line up the markings you made for alignment earlier.

  • Reassemble the rest of the engine in the exact opposite order that you disassembled it.

  • Reattach the negative terminal of your battery.
