How to Install the Rear Axle on a Polaris ATV

Installing a rear axle on the Polaris ATV is similar for each year; however, this particular process addresses the 1999 model-year and newer. If you are replacing a damaged rear axle, inspect the CV joint, rear axle bearing and bearing carrier for damage. Replacing the rear bearings, while replacing your rear axle, saves time and money for a minimal cost. Your local Polaris dealership carries CV joint and bearing assembly kits designed to fit in older model Polaris ATVs.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber mallet
  • Anti-seize compound
  • Apply anti-seize compound to the outer and inner splines of the inboard CV joint of your Polaris ATV's rear axle.

  • Align the splines and install the right side rear axle into the transmission output gear by sliding it straight on. It may be necessary to tap on the inner CV joint to aid in the installation with a rubber mallet to force the locking ring into the transmission output gear groove.

  • Pull back on the axle to make sure it is properly secured in the transmission. If the axles slides out, it was not installed correctly.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the left side rear axle. Shift the transmission into neutral and rotate both rear axles by hand to make sure they rotate freely with no binding or roughness.
