How to Install a Head Gasket Sealer

The head gasket is the part of the car that seal's the engine's cylinder. Sometimes due to overheating, a head gasket can become cracked or warped, often costing thousands of dollars to repair. If it's an emergency and you need to repair it right away you can use head gasket sealer as a temporary fix. This liquid is made from sodium silicate and fills in the cracks and holes so that you can get your car back on the road.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Antifreeze
  • Plastic bottles
  • Head gasket sealer
  • Crescent wrench
  • Turn your car off and wait until the engine and radiator are cooled down. Wait for at least two hours before you start working on it. The engine should be cool to the touch.

  • Find the drain valve located at the bottom of the radiator.

  • Place the drain pan beneath the radiator and open up the valve using the crescent wrench. Wait for the coolant to drain completely. This will take about five to ten minutes. The radiator needs to be empty for the sealant to work. Close the valve.

  • Place a funnel into the mouth of a plastic container and empty the antifreeze into it. You can recycle the antifreeze at an auto mechanic’s shop or at a recycling center.

  • Check the manufacturer’s guide on how much water to combine with the sealant and mix it.

  • Pour the head gasket sealer into the radiator and allow it to settle for at least 45 minutes or as per directed by the manufacturer. The sealant will fill the cracks or holes inside the blown head gasket.

  • Place a pan underneath the radiator and open up the drain valve. Drain the excess sealant and close the valve

  • Add new coolant to the radiator of your vehicle. Check to make sure there are no leaks.
