How to Troubleshoot a Duramax Engine

Car owners everywhere consider Duramax one of the most reliable producers of car engines on the market. In 2001, one of Duramax's engines, the Duramax 6600 Turbo Diesel, was even voted one of the top 10 engines by Ward's Communications. Even the best engines, however, sometimes have small problems. Fortunately, Duramax engine problems can be diagnosed or repaired easily by practicing a few troubleshooting techniques.

Things You'll Need

  • Duramax engine manual
  • Clear hose
  • Car scan tool
  • Check the engine thoroughly for unseated or loose connectors. Do this gently to avoid disconnecting important connectors or high-voltage wires. Use the Duramax engine's manual to follow the proper procedure for checking the air filter minder and 93-volt circuits. If the engine is fine after you start the car, then the troubleshooting is complete.

  • Examine the pressure levels to ensure it is safe to open the fuel system. Remove the dipstick from the engine, and check the oil. Dirty oil, low oil or a tank that is too full indicates the need for an oil change.

  • Check the fuel supply line for leaks and/or restrictions if the problem with the engine involves difficulty starting or low power. Insert a clear hose between the fuel injection control module outlet and the filter inlet. The appearance of white smoke indicates problems with the heater or glow plug, and the appearance of black smoke indicates air leaks. Also, if the mercury supply line vacuum is 5 to 10 inches or more, a filter change is in order.

  • Monitor diagnostic trouble codes, fuel pressure and temperature with a car scan tool. Abnormal results in any category may indicate the engine problem. Consult a mechanic for assistance if necessary.
