How to Rebuild a 42RE Transmission

The 42RE transmission is part of the Dodge and Chrysler line of vehicles. Preventative maintenance is one method to protect the 42RE transmission over time. Things You'll Need

  • Transmission rebuild kit
  • Screwdriver
  • Allen wrench set
  • Car jack
  • Transmission fluid
  • Remove the mounting frame bolts on the transmission with a wrench. Lower the transmission out of the compartment bay. Pull the bell housing apart using a screwdriver.

  • Find the gear shift controls on the transmission. Place the new gear shift control arm in place. Tighten the gear shifts with an Allen wrench. Position the gear pinions in place on the bell housing rods. Screw into place using an Allen wrench.

  • Position the pinion gears on the notches of the transmission gear shaft. Torque the gears with an Allen wrench. Place the gasket into the bell housing. Tighten the bolts on the gasket with a wrench.

  • Connect the transmission to a car jack. Raise the jack and position the transmission into the transmission compartment. Screw the mounting bolts with a wrench.

  • Raise the hood of the car. Pull out the transmission cap sensor. Put the funnel into the compartment hole. Pour fluid into the transmission compartment and replace the sensor cap.
