How to Change the Throttle Cable in a 1997 Chevy S10

The throttle (accelerator) cable on your 1997 Chevy S10 pickup is attached at one end to the accelerator pedal and at the other end to the throttle lever located on the throttle body in the engine compartment. The throttle cable is located near the airbags and airbag sensors. To avoid the risk of inadvertent airbag deployment and possible injury, deactivate the airbag system before working in the passenger compartment.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Throttle cable
  • Sealant
  • Place the front wheels in the forward position. Take out the ignition key. Remove the cover from the fuse block located on the left side of the instrument panel. Pull out the airbag fuse with your fingers. Note: Look at the inside of the cover to locate the airbag fuse.

  • Disconnect the yellow Connector Position Assurance (CPA) connector at the base of the steering column. Note: Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws holding the knee bolster and the left side sound insulator panel for access to the CPA connector.

  • Detach the throttle cable from the accelerator pedal by sliding the cable through the slot in the pedal arm. Press on the tangs on the throttle cable cover and hold them into the cable while pushing the cable through the firewall.

  • Detach the throttle cable from the throttle lever on the throttle body (in the engine compartment) by rotating the lever and removing the throttle cable. Use a flat head screwdriver to lift the throttle cable retaining tabs and pull the cable through the throttle bracket housing. Remove the throttle cable from the vehicle.

  • Install the replacement throttle cable by reversing the removal steps. Check the operation of the throttle cable by depressing and releasing the accelerator pedal. Put sealant on the engine compartment side of the cable where it goes through the firewall.

  • Reactivate the airbag system by reconnecting the CPA connector, then reinstall the air bag fuse and fuse block cover. Reattach the knee bolster and sound insulator.
