How to Replace an S10's AC Compressor

The air conditioning system of your truck is primarily composed of three parts: the condenser, the compressor, and the coolant recovery tank. Replacing any of these parts requires that the air conditioning system first be discharged at an approved facility equipped to handle the refrigerant. As the A/C system is under high pressure, it is extremely important to not loosen any bolts or fittings until the system has been safely discharged.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrenches
  • 3/8 inch drive socket set
  • Discharge the air conditioning system at a state-approved coolant recovery station.

  • Disconnect the battery from the vehicle, then remove the serpentine belt from the front of the engine. Use alcohol and a clean cloth to clean the surfaces of the compressor surrounding the places where the refrigerant lines run into and out of the compressor.

  • Use a wrench to remove the two lines running from the compressor, then disconnect the wiring harness which also runs to the compressor. Stuff rags into the A/C lines to prevent debris from entering the air condition system.

  • Unbolt the compressor from its brackets and lift it out of the engine compartment. Loosen the compressor's oil plug, then drain the compressor oil into a plastic cup. Measure an equal amount of new compressor oil and pour it into the new compressor.

  • Bolt the new compressor into the bracket, then attach the air conditioning lines and plug in the wiring harness.

  • Reinstall the serpentine belt, then attach the battery and have the air conditioning system evacuated, pressure tested, and filled at an approved air conditioning repair facility.
