How to Install a Trunk Lid Spring

Your trunk opens because a spring pushes up on the lid when the latch is disengaged. Over time, however, this spring can lose it's elasticity and thus no longer push up when you unlatch the trunk. This then leads to the trunk having to be pushed open manually and then held open while you load or unload items. This process can not only be inconvenient but dangerous as the trunk hood is unstable and could fall on you if you happen to slip and let go. Faulty springs can be easily fixed with a prop stick, a replacement spring and a screwdriver set – saving you a costly trip to the mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Prop stick
  • Screwdriver set
  • Replacement spring
  • Put the car in Park and pull the parking brake up to keep it from moving while you are working on it. Make sure the car if off before you exit the driver's seat and go to the back of the car.

  • Use your key to unlock the trunk and open it slightly ajar.

  • Pull the trunk lid up and a place a prop stick under the lid to keep it up while you work on it.

  • Remove the spring strut. Locate the attachment point of the spring strut on the trunk lid. Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the screw that goes through the center of the eyebolt. Go to the other end of the spring strut and unscrew the Philipshead screw that secures that end to an eyebolt on the interior of the trunk. Pull the spring strut off by hand.

  • Slide in the new spring strut and line up the screw holes with the eyebolt holes on the top and bottom.

  • Slide in the screws at each end to hold the spring strut in place. Then tighten the screws down with a Philips screwdriver. The spring strut should not wiggle when you place a modicum of pressure on the trunk lid.

  • Shut the trunk lid and open it again to see if the spring strut stays in place.
