How to Replace a Vapor Canister on a 2000 Toyota Echo

Your 2001 Toyota Echo came equipped with a vapor canister that is used to control fuel emissions from your exhaust system. The vapor canister is a canister-shaped object that is mounted to the underside of your Echo next to the gas tank. The inside is filled with charcoal, which helps to absorb vapors. It takes around 30 minutes to change your Echo's vapor canister.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Slide the jack under the back end of your Echo and jack it up. Set your jack stands in place and set the Echo on them.

  • Slide under the back end of your Echo on the gas tank side and locate the vapor canister. It will be just behind the gas tank, mounted near the rear wheel well.

  • Use your pliers to pull the hose clamp attached to your vapor canister.

  • Loosen the bolts holding your vapor canister and then lift the canister out by hand.
