How to Replace a Tailgate Handle

Tailgates are found on many types of vehicles ranging from pickup trucks to some sport utility vehicles. The handle releases the locking mechanism which allows you to lower the tailgate. If the tailgate handle on your vehicle is cracked or otherwise broken it will need to be replaced with a new part. If you have basic automotive repair knowledge, you can replace it yourself. You can obtain a new handle set from an auto supply store or your local car dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Find the mounting screws for the tailgate handle on the inside of the tailgate. Remove these screws with the Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Disengage the latch rod from the handle. Pull the rod out of the clip on the handle or pry it out with the flat head screwdriver.

  • Verify that the replacement tailgate handle matches the old tailgate handle.

  • Secure the latch rod to the replacement handle by pressing it into the clip.

  • Insert the mounting screws into the tailgate. Tighten the screws using the Phillips head screwdriver to secure the handle to the tailgate.

  • Lift up on the new handle to release the locking mechanism and open the tailgate to make sure that the new handle is working properly.
