How to Replace a Chevy Truck Door

The doors on a Chevrolet truck are held to the frame by four hinges. The hinges are held on by a few bolts. Once the bolts are removed, you can easily pull the door off the truck to replace it. The replacement process typically takes less than an hour to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket extensions
  • Apply the truck's parking brake by pressing down on the parking brake lever. Turn the engine off and remove the keys from the ignition.

  • Open the door, which is secured by five hinges, with each hinge being secured by a single bolt. There is one hinge on each side of the door, with two hinges at the front of the door, one near the bottom and one near the top. The top-most hinge and bottom-most hinge are secured by six-mm bolts. The rear-most hinge is secured by a four-mm bolt. The top-front hinge is secured by a seven-mm bolt and the bottom-front hinge by a five-mm bolt.

  • Have another person secure the door in order to avoid damaging it. Remove all of the bolts and hinges. Once the hinges are off, remove the door from the vehicle.

  • Attach the replacement door to the truck and, while someone supports the door, reinstall the hinges and their bolts. Make sure all bolts are tightened to 26 ft. lbs. to ensure that the door is properly aligned. Close the door when done.
