How to Replace the Vapor Canister on a 2003 Dodge Neon

The vapor canister, otherwise known as the charcoal canister, is a device that is attached to a 2003 Dodge Neon to facilitate emissions control. The cylinder is mounted inside a bracket next to the Neon's gasoline tank. The cylinder is filled with charcoal on the inside which helps to absorb fuel vapors when the vehicle is running. If you simply need to replace it, or if you chose to remove the canister, it will take you approximately 30 minutes or so to do at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Wheel chocks
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Put the vehicle in park and make sure the parking brake is engaged. Chock the front wheels and slide the jack under the rear frame, jack it up and slide jack stands on each side underneath the rear frame. Let your Neon down on the jack stands.

  • Locate the vapor canister which is positioned behind the Neon's gasoline tank. It is a cylindrical shaped canister and it is mounted to the underside of the vehicle by a bracket.

  • Use a screwdriver to remove the hoses attached to the outside of the canister.

  • Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the vapor canister's bracket. Once the bracket is loose, slip the canister out by hand.
