How to Install an Evaporative Canister on a 1999 Chevy Blazer

The evaporative canister is part of your Blazer's emission control system. The canister, which is also known as a charcoal canister, regulates fuel vapors. If your evaporative canister is faulty, your Blazer may display a malfunction indicator light (MIL), or a check engine light. You may also notice a marked drop in fuel efficiency. Installing a new evaporative canister takes less than 10 minutes and is one of the simplest do-it-yourself repairs.

Things You'll Need

  • Marker or labels
  • Ratchet
  • Shut off the Blazer's engine and open the hood. Locate the evaporative canister. Find it in the front passenger-side corner of the engine compartment (closest to the grille). The black canister is about the size and shape of a coffee can.

  • Mark the hoses per their connection location on the canister (right or left). This will ensure you connect the proper hose to the proper port when you are installing the new canister.

  • Unplug the vacuum hoses from the canister with your hands. Do not use pliers or any other type of tool (to avoid damaging the soft hoses). Simply wiggle and gently pull the hoses away from the canister ports to disconnect them.

  • Examine the sides of the canister to find the mounting strap. On each side of the strap, you'll see a bolt. Remove the two bolts with your ratchet, and then pull away the mounting strap.

  • Lift the old canister upward to remove it. Set the new canister in its place and attach the mounting strap to its side. Hold the strap and canister in place, lining up the strap mounting holes with the mounting holes in the engine compartment. Insert and tighten the bolts well with the ratchet to secure the new canister.

  • Attach the hoses to the proper ports on the evaporative canister. Close the hood to finish.
