The power steering system on your 1992 Toyota Camry is comprised of the pump, the fluid reservoir and a belt-driven pulley. If the power steering pump starts to fail, you might notice it is leaking. Another signs of a failing power steering pump is difficulty in turning. If your power steering pump does go bad and starts leaking it should be replaced. Experienced home mechanics should be able to do the job in about two-and-a-half hours.
Place the tire tool over the lug nuts and on the front passenger side wheel. Turn counterclockwise to loosen them.
Jack up the front passenger side of your Camry and remove the front wheel.
Remove the fender well with a 10 mm socket.
Pop the Camry's hood. Open the power steering fluid reservoir lid by hand by turning it to the left. Remove the pump's return hose with a pair of pliers.
Insert the tube end of the hand pump into the reservoir and pump out the old power steering fluid. Dump the old fluid in your drain pan.
Loosen the belt tensioner bolt with your socket set and slip the belt off the pump's pulley.
Access the pump's retaining bolts from underneath through the wheel well and remove them with your socket set.
Pull the old power steering pump out by hand once the retaining bolts are removed. Set the new pump in place by hand, then re-insert the pump's two mounting bolts. Tighten them with your Torque wrench to 32 foot pounds.
Slip the belt back over the pulley and tighten the tensioner bolt to 38 foot pounds with your Torque wrench.
Slip the return hose back onto the new pump and tighten it down with pliers.
Add two pints of fresh power steering fluid to your fluid reservoir and put the cap back on.
Hold your wheel well cover back in place, then replace the bolts. Tighten the bolts with your socket set. Replace your wheels and lug nuts. Lower your Camry down from the jack and jack stands.
