How to Replace a Nerf Bar Pad

Nerf bars, also known as step bars or step-downs, are metal or aluminum assemblies that run along the bottom of truck or SUV. They are used as a step to get into vehicles that are mounted higher up than a normal car. Nerf bars have a piece of plastic, called a pad, that is used when stepping up into the vehicle. The nerf bar pad prevents your foot from slipping on the slippery metal of the nerf bar itself, so if the pastic pad gets cracked or damaged it needs to be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • Replacement nerf bar pad
  • Remove the screws holding the nerf bar pad in place. Depending on the brand of your nerf bar, there may be one to two screws that hold the pad into place.

  • Pry the old nerf bar pad up. If necessary, use a putty knife to help you scrape and pry it off.

  • Set your new pad down on the nerf bar assembly and align the holes on the pad with the screw holes on the nerf bar. Insert screws and hand turn them to get them going. Tighten them down with your screwdriver.
