My Bike Is Stuck in 3rd Gear

When your bike or motorcycle gets stuck in third gear, it can be frustrating. This will often happen after coming to a stop, and it can be embarrassing and frustrating, especially if there is a long line of cars behind you. By troubleshooting the issue and trying a few simple things, you may be able to fix the problem yourself.

  • Roll the bike a few inches forward and pull it out of third gear again. If moving the bike forward doesn't work, turn the bike off, waiting a few seconds, and then turn it back on. Sometimes the bike will move out of third gear after it has been restarted. Let the clutch out slightly. Feel whether or not the bike will engage in the third gear. Put the clutch back in and check to see whether the bike will come out of third gear.

  • If downshifting, attempt to click the gear into place. If the gear does not click into place or out of third gear, begin letting the clutch out again. If this doesn't work a second time, attempt to downshift as you're slowing the bike down. Avoid downshifting more than two gears at one time. Pause in between gear clicks.

  • Try rocking the bike back and forth gently while attempting to take it out of third gear. If this is an ongoing problem, try having the clutch cable adjusted to ensure that it fully disengages the clutch. Have the replacement gasket for the clutch and replace. Finally, have a repair service that specializes in your type of bike troubleshoot the issue if basic suggestions aren't working.
