Chevy Express Turning Signal Problems

The Express is a van produced by Chevrolet. Like all vehicles, the Chevy Express van has both front and rear turning signals. If you experience problems with either the front or rear turning signals, you should check the bulbs and the fuses. Those are the two most common issues with any exterior light on your Chevy Express van. The easiest solution is to replace the faulty component.

Front Bulbs

  • Turn the engine of the Express off and use a small slotted screwdriver to remove the outboard clip on the turn signal assembly. This clip can be found right on the assembly at the front of the vehicle. There is no need to open the hood. Once the clip is removed, pull the lamp assembly forward and move it to the outboard side to loosen the tabs. Remove the lamp assembly from the grille of the vehicle and squeeze the tab on the side of the turn signal bulb socket. Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove it from the assembly. Remove the old bulb and use a clean rag to install a new 3157-type bulb. Place the socket back into the assembly and place the assembly back into the vehicle, making sure to reattach the clip.

Rear Bulbs

  • Turn the engine off and open the Express' rear door. Remove the two inboard-side nuts securing the tail lamp assembly. Use a socket wrench to remove the nuts. Pull the assembly out of the vehicle and slide it upward to release the lower clip. Remove the three nuts on the tail lamp assembly itself to remove it from the vehicle. Remove the turn signal bulb socket by squeezing it and rotating it counterclockwise. Pull the socket out of the assembly. Pull the bulb out of the socket and use a clean rag to install a new 3157-type bulb. Place the socket back into the assembly and reinstall the taillight assembly.

Fuses

  • Replacing the fuses is significantly easier than replacing the bulbs. Open the driver's side door and remove the cover from the fuse block located under the driver's seat. Locate the fuses numbered "15" and "16." These are the front and rear turn signal fuses. Check the metal rod inside of each fuse. If the metal rod is splintered, it will have to be replaced. Pull the broken fuses out of the fuse block and install replacement 15A fuses. Reattach the fuse cover and close the driver's side door.

Warnings

  • The bulbs can become very hot. You should allow five minutes to pass before replacing any bulb on your vehicle. In addition, halogen bulbs contain pressurized gases and explode if scratched or accidentally dropped. You should always use a clean rag to install a replacement halogen bulb because the oils and dirt from your bare hands can cause hot-spot formation on the glass surface of the bulb, which may cause the bulb to fail.
