How to Replace a 2000 Saturn Ignition Control Module

A vehicle's ignition module signals the coil when to fire; in turn, the coil sends sparks to the spark plugs, which facilitates the ignition of the gasses in the cylinders and starts the vehicle. If your vehicle will not start, or stalls out when the motor gets hot, the ignition module may be malfunctioning. Replacing the ignition control module in your 2000 Saturn is a relatively quick car repair. However, it is usually an expensive repair, so it is prudent to have an automotive parts store check the ignition module with specialized testing equipment before replacing it.

Things You'll Need

  • Sockets
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Masking tape
  • Pen
  • Open the hood. Remove the negative cable from the battery, designated by a negative (-) sign, to prevent electrical shock.

  • Use masking tape and a pen to number the wires before unplugging them to ease reassembly. Unplug the spark plug wires from the coils -- they are located near the front of the motor.

  • Disconnect the ignition module wiring connector from the module. It is located on the top of the module, behind the plug wires.

  • Remove the four bolts with a socket, ratchet and extension, from above and below the coil packs, which are holding the module to the motor. Remove the module. Unplug the two coil packs from the module.

  • Install by reversing the removal steps.
