How to Fix a GMC Jimmy's Dash Lights

The dash lights on your GMC Jimmy serve several purposes, the most noticeable one being that they illuminate the instrument cluster so that you can see all of the instrumentation in the dark. The dash lights also serve as warning indicators whenever there is a problem with your vehicle. The easiest way to tell if a dash light is out is to switch the ignition to the "ON" position and inspect the dash lights. They will all light up, allowing you to see any malfunctioning dash lights. Fixing the dash lights is a matter of either replacing the faulty bulb or replacing the dash light fuse if all of the dash lights are malfunctioning.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement 1157-type bulb
  • Replacement 15A fuse

Replacing Dash Light Bulbs

  • Turn off the engine of the Jimmy and open the hood, securing it with the prop rod. Disconnect the battery using a wrench.

  • Use a slotted screwdriver to remove the four clips holding in the dashboard trim around the instrument cluster. Lower the steering wheel and remove the dashboard trim.

  • Remove the corner screws from the instrument cluster with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the instrument cluster towards you and disconnect its electrical connector. Pull the cluster out of the vehicle.

  • Remove any old bulbs by turning them counterclockwise and install new bulbs by turning them clockwise. Reattach the instrument cluster to the vehicle and reattach the dashboard trim. Reconnect the battery.

Replacing Dash Light Fuse

  • Open the driver's side door and use a slotted screwdriver to remove the cover from the fuse panel.

  • Remove the fuse in slot number "4." Use the accompanied fuse puller to remove the fuse. The fuse puller is located on the underside of the fuse panel cover.

  • Use the fuse puller to install a replacement 15A fuse. Place the cover back onto the fuse panel.
