How to Change Lights on the Dashboard on a Mustang

The dashboard lights on the Ford Mustang are mounted on the instrument panel. They allow you to view all of the gauges and dials on the instrument panel in low-light conditions. In order for you to change any of the dashboard lights on the Mustang, you need to remove the instrument panel from the driver's side dashboard. The job is fairly straightforward, and all you will need to complete it are some basic tools and 195-type bulbs.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 195-type replacement bulbs
  • Open the hood of the Mustang. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, using a socket wrench.

  • Pull the headlight switch off the dash. Insert a flat-head screwdriver behind the headlight switch panel and pry it up to remove the panel. Remove the two screws that are revealed, using a Torx screwdriver.

  • Pull off the plastic dash trim surrounding the instrument panel with your hands. As you remove the trim, you will also have to remove the five clips holding the panel in place. These clips can be removed by hand, but if you are having a difficult time, use the flat-head screwdriver to pop them out. Be careful not to break them.

  • Use a socket wrench to remove the four bolts securing the instrument panel to the Mustang. Move the steering wheel to its lowest position and swivel the instrument panel so that you can reach behind it. Remove the two wiring connectors at the rear of the instrument panel.

  • Pull the instrument panel from the vehicle. Remove any burned-out bulbs and replace them with 195-type bulbs. Reassemble the instrument panel and dash trim. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
