How to Service the Transmission on a 2002 Ford Expedition

The 2002 Ford Expedition automatic transmission uses Mercon V transmission fluid to lubricate the transmission's internal parts as well as provide the hydraulic properties necessary to facilitate proper shifting. The fluid is under tremendous stress and strain that makes it break down over time. Due to this, Ford Motor Company recommends servicing the transmission every 30,000 miles or sooner. Due to the specialized equipment and training necessary to properly service a transmission, only those with access to transmission service machines and specialized transmission repair training should attempt this task.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 gallon bucket
  • 2 cases Mercon V transmission fluid in quarts
  • Box wrench set
  • Rags
  • Funnel
  • Fill the five gallon bucket with 20 quarts of Mercon V transmission fluid. Insert the inlet hose from the transmission service machine into the fluid in the bucket. Follow the transmission service machine's specific user guide for filling the clean fluid tank with the Mercon V from the bucket.

  • Remove the transmission cooler lines from the Expedition's radiator side tank using the box wrench set. Connect the lines to the inlet and outlet hoses on the transmission service machine using the box wrench set.

  • Start the Expedition. Follow the transmission service machine's specific user guide to begin the transmission fluid exchange.

  • Shut the transmission service machine off when all the clean fluid has pumped into the Expedition. Monitor this by watching the fluid level on the transmission service machine's clean fluid tank. Shut the Expedition off.

  • Unhook the transmission service machine's inlet and outlet hoses from the Expedition's transmission cooler lines with your box wrench set. Reconnect the lines to the transmission cooler with the box wrench set. Wipe away any spilled fluid with rags.

  • Start the Expedition, depress the brake pedal firmly and shift the transmission through all the gears slowly before returning the transmission to park.

  • Pull the transmission dipstick and check the transmission fluid level. Top off as needed through the dipstick tube with the funnel and remaining Mercon V until the transmission fluid is in the crosshatched area on the dipstick.
