How to Install a Bumper on a Mitsubishi Galant

The bumpers on a Mitsubishi Galant are made of a thick plastic material that can bend and give. Where sheetmetal would dent, the bumpers are flexible enough to bounce and show no dents. More extensive damage can crack or puncture the bumpers, requiring them to be replaced with new ones. Installing a bumper on a Mitsubishi Galant takes about an hour of time and requires only a few regular tools found in most toolboxes.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Bumper hardware

Front Bumper

  • Open the hood and place the new bumper onto the front of the Galant. Lean against the car and bumper to hold the bumper up, unless you have someone to help hold it in place. Install and tighten three bolts along the top of the bumper using a ratchet and 10 mm socket. Close the hood.

  • Get underneath the Galant front bumper and pull the splash guard up to meet the bottom of the bumper. Install the black plastic clips through the holes in the bumper and splash guard. The clips snap into place.

  • Move to the side of the bumper, just in front of the front tires. Install and tighten the row of five screws on the edge of the bumper facing the tire.

Rear Bumper

  • Open the trunk and place the rear bumper on the Galant. Insert the plastic clips that fit into the holes along the top of the trunk. These clips pop into place once pushed through the holes and will hold the bumper in place.

  • Get underneath the rear bumper and reach up to the seam where the bumper and rear quarter panel of the car meet. Use a ratchet and 10 mm socket to install three bolts on each side of the car.

  • Look directly behind the rear tires and install a row of three screws on the edge of the bumper. The holes and faces of the screws will face the rear tires.
