How Do I Change the Bulb for the Gear Shift Indicator on a Subaru Forester?

The Subaru Forester has several lights on its instrument panel known as dash lights. The gear shift indicator light is one of these dash lights that allows the driver to see which gear the transmission is in. Replacing this light requires an 85066GA390-type bulb that can be purchased from your local Subaru dealership or online through Subaru's website.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb
  • Open the driver's side door of your Subaru Forester.

  • Take off the plastic dash trim surrounding the instrument panel. The trim is held in place by two screws on the top. Once these screws are removed with a Phillips head screwdriver, the trim can be easily pulled off.

  • Remove the screws holding the instrument panel in place. Pull the instrument panel away from the vehicle and reach behind it to disconnect the three wiring clips at the rear of the instrument panel.

  • Pull the instrument panel out of the vehicle and pull the old bulb out of its socket on the underside of the panel. Install a new bulb by pushing it into the socket.

  • Reassemble the instrument panel and plastic dash trim.
