How to Remove ATV Wheel Bearings

Every all-terrain vehicle has two wheel bearings located inside of each rotor. The bearings run against the metal races inside the rotor and allow the wheel to spin freely on the spindle. When the bearings break down, they gash the inside of the bearing races and cause metal to fill up inside the spindle. The result could damage the spindle and rotor, so it's wise to remove them.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack stand
  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Place the ATV on a jack stand to raise the wheel that you want to replace the wheel bearings on.

  • Remove the nuts that secure the wheel onto the wheel studs with a socket and ratchet. Pull the ATV's wheel off of the rotor.

  • Pry the center cap off of the ATV's wheel rotor with a screwdriver if the rotor is equipped with a cap. If you can see the spindle nut, your ATV does not have a cap and you can skip this step.

  • Remove the spindle nut with a socket and pull the rotor off the spindle.

  • Drive the bearing and bearing races out of each side of the rotor with a screwdriver and a rubber mallet.

  • Tap the wheel bearing into the back side of the rotor and then tap the bearing race into the rotor with the mallet. Fill the inside of the rotor with packing grease. Then tap the front bearing and bearing race into the front of the rotor.

  • Slide the rotor onto the spindle and wipe off the excess grease that the spindle forces out of the rotor with a towel.

  • Secure the rotor with the spindle nut and socket. Then press the cover over the nut if your ATV is equipped with one.

  • Place the wheel on the ATV and secure it with the nuts and socket set.
