Electric Fuel Pump Wiring Instructions

Electric fuel pumps distribute fuel from the tank to the engine of a vehicle using an electrical system to provide power. Fuel pumps can either be located in the gas tank or just outside the gas tank depending on the design of the vehicle. Extreme care should always be taken when working around gasoline and electricity. Keep a Class B fire extinguisher on hand at all times during this procedure.

Things You'll Need

  • Screw drivers
  • Wrenches
  • Sockets and Driver
  • Non-corrosive solder
  • Soldering iron
  • 14 gauge wire
  • Wire cutter/stripper
  • Pliers
  • Disconnect the negative (black) terminal from the vehicle battery by loosening the terminal bolt then removing the cable. Make sure the cable is held back so it won't touch the battery while you're working.

  • Remove the fuel pump. Consult the repair manual for your vehicle to find out if you have an internal or external fuel pump. Keep the fuel line connected to the fuel pump as long as possible to prevent fuel leaks. Only disconnect the fuel line from the old pump just before you connect it to the new pump.

  • Disconnect the wiring from the old fuel pump. Fuel pumps may have nut, screw, soldered, or clamp style terminals. The negative terminal takes the black wire and the positive terminal takes the red wire. Do not damage the wires as you disconnect them from the old fuel pump; if it is a soldered connection only cut enough wire to disconnect the pump, and no more.

  • Connect the red wire to the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal. Tighten a screw or nut terminal by twisting the connector until the wire is secure. Tighten a clamp style terminal by pinching with pliers. Carefully solder the connection for a solder style terminal. Do not use electrical tape for an in-tank pump as the fuel will dissolve the tape.

  • Re-install the fuel filter as per the manufacturers instructions. Re-connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal and tighten the terminal bolt.
