The alternator is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. Alternators are used in cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs and many other vehicles to charge the battery and power the electrical system when the engine is running. If your Saab 9-3 requires a jump start with a relatively new battery, it is often because of a faulty alternator. You can bring the alternator to a local auto parts store for a free check.
Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable on your Saab. Drain the engine coolant.
Using the screwdriver, remove the upper and lower engine cover. Use the pliers to gently loosen the plastic nuts holding the wheel-well liner in place and remove.
Remove the drive belts and slide them through the open wheel-well liner. Disconnect the air hose from the air filter housing. Remove the air filter housing.
Using the pliers, apply pressure to the radiator hose clamp and remove the hose from the radiator.
Disconnect the vent hose attached to the throttle body. Bend the loose hose over so it is out of the way.
Pull off the alternator electrical connectors. Using the appropriate size wrench, remove the two alternator bolts. Lift the alternator upward and out.
Lower the new alternator into place and attach with the two alternator bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 foot-pounds. Replace the vent hose fastener to the camshaft cover and vent hose to the throttle body.
Attach the radiator hose to the radiator. Attach the intake air pipe to the air filter housing. Replace the air filter housing cover.
Replace the upper and lower engine cover. By hand, replace the wheel-well liner and tighten the plastic bolts.
Refill the cooling system and attach the negative battery cable.
