How to Change the Alternator in a 2001 Ford Focus

An alternator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. It's used in many different types of vehicles including cars, trucks, boats and all-terrain vehicles. The automotive alternator is usually belt-driven at two to three times the engine speed.

The alternator placement on the 2001 Ford Focus is accessible from top side of the motor and usually only requires one individual for removal and installation. The old alternator core can be returned to the auto parts store where the new alternator was purchased for proper disposal.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Open the hood of the 2001 Ford Focus and disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the alternator harness connectors.

  • Remove the accessory drive belts using the appropriate size wrench to create slack on the belt.

  • Remove the power steering pipe brackets and the exhaust manifold heat shield using your Phillips screwdriver. You may need to use a smaller wrench if the screws have been changed to bolts.

  • Remove the two bolts holding the alternator in place using the appropriate size wrench. Remove alternator by pulling up.

  • Position the new alternator in place of the old one and perform the above steps in reverse to finish the installation.
