How Do I Repair Front Wheel Bearings on a 2003 Ford F350 4-Wheel Drive?

Front wheel bearings are part of the hub bearing assembly, which controls the vehicle's movement. Wheel bearings rotate in the hub and allow the wheel to turn when the vehicle is in motion. Wheel bearings require a specific grease (called wheel bearing grease), which lubricates the bearing and hub and prevent heat and friction damage while the wheels are turning. If damaged, wheel bearings cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard wrench set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and standard socket set
  • Hammer
  • Brass drift
  • Snap-ring pliers
  • Vise
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Wheel bearing grease
  • Lineman's pliers
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Small bungee cord or rope

Removal

  • Jack the vehicle up off the ground using a jack and jack stands. Loosen the lug nuts and remove the wheel using a tire iron.

  • Remove the brake calipers using the correct wrench or ratchet for the caliper bolts. Remove the brake caliper bracket along with the brake rotor using the appropriate ratchet and socket.

  • Remove the hub lock with pliers by pressing the retainer ring in and then pulling the hub lock out.

  • Remove the axle shaft snap ring using snap ring pliers. Remove the axle shaft thrust washers and place them next to the snap ring, away from the work area.

  • Remove and disconnect the ABS sensor and mounting clips. Remove the knuckle nuts using a ratchet and socket.

  • Remove the hub bearings from the knuckle and the axle shaft. Remove the dust shield and the anti-lock brake system sensor from the hub.

  • Drive the hub off with the hammer and brass drift. Pull out the axle shaft and the seal from the assembly.

Installation

  • Clean all areas of the hub and axle shaft with a soft, lint-free rag. Place the axle shaft in the vise. Install the new main seal on the axle shaft with the hammer and the wheel seal installer tool. Install the axle shaft and line it up with the differential gears.

  • Seat the main wheel seal using the hammer and brass drift. Install the ABS sensor and the dust shield.

  • Install the new hub bearings with new grease. Install and tighten the knuckle nuts. Install the thrust washers and the snap ring. Install the brake rotor and caliper. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts.

  • Lower the vehicle and test-drive it.
