How to Fix Short Range on Keyless Lock FOB for Toyota Tundra

According to most Toyota mechanics, if the range on your Tundra's keyless entry remote FOB is not working properly or is shorter than it should be, the problem could be with the programming or it could be from a dying battery. Numerous factors can cause programming issues with Toyota keyless lock FOBs, including faulty battery replacement, electrical malfunctions and accidental de-programming of your keys. Before you call a professional to diagnose the problem with your FOB, try replacing the battery and reprogramming your remote.

  • Purchase a new battery from Toyota or from your local auto parts store. All you need to do is provide the year of the Tundra and a Toyota or parts store employee will find a battery for you. Pay for your battery and replace the old one by removing the back of the keyless entry remote FOB, switching batteries and replacing the back of the FOB. Test your new battery to see if the short range improves.

  • Re-program your battery. This process is done very quickly and requires you follow several steps. Begin by entering your car, leaving the driver's door open and unlocked. You now have five seconds to insert and remove your key from the ignition of your car two times.

  • Close and open your door twice, leaving the door open at the end of the second time around and re-insert your key into the ignition of your vehicle and pull it back out. You have 40 seconds to complete this step.

  • Repeat the previous step along with the addition of then closing the driver's door, inserting the key back into the ignition and turning it on and then back off, removing it completely from the ignition. If you have been successful at programming your remote so far your door locks will lock and unlock without any assistance from you. This step needs completing in less than 40 seconds.

  • Push, for one and a half seconds, both the lock and unlock buttons on your Tundra's keyless entry remote control FOB. Do not hold either button down any longer than one and a half seconds. Let go and immediately re-push the lock button for two seconds. Once again your doors will lock and unlock without any assistance from you if you've done this step correctly. If not -- start over.
