How to Remove the Sway Bar Link in a Ford Explorer

Ford Explorer sway bar links connect both ends of the sway bar to the rest of the Explorer's suspension. The purpose of the links is to assist the bar in dampening body roll when the Explorer is deviating from a straight path. The links, made of short steel rods with rubber bushings on each end, endure a lot of stress and strain in their service life. If you own your Explorer long enough, you'll need to replace them sooner or later. Anyone with fundamental auto-repair skill can remove sway bar links on a Ford Explorer in under 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 Ramps
  • 2 Wheel chocks
  • Socket set
  • Drive the Explorer's front tires onto the ramps. Place the Explorer's transmission in park. Push the parking brake pedal down to engage the brake.

  • Set the wheel chocks in front of and behind one of the Explorer's rear tires to hold the SUV in place.

  • Unbolt the Explorer's sway bar link from the sway bar with the socket set. Unbolt the other end of the link with the socket set. Remove the sway bar link from the Explorer's suspension by hand.

  • Repeat step three on the Explorer's other sway bar link if necessary.
