Information on How to Remove a Tahoe's Headlight

The Chevy Tahoe, along with the other Chevy SUVs and trucks, has a fairly standard procedure for removing the headlights. While some use release brackets in the back of the headlight assembly, the Tahoe features two locking pins that are shaped like an upside down L for each assembly. The headlights are inside the headlight assembly and use separate bulbs for the low- and high-beam units. To remove and/or replace the headlights, you must first remove the assembly from the SUV.

  • Check that the lights are off and apply the parking brake, with the vehicle in "Park" and the engine off.

  • Open the hood and find the two locking pins on top of the headlight assembly. The low beams are on the outer sides of the headlight assembly and the high beams are on the inner side, closer to the grille.

  • Pivot the tops of the two locking pins away from the locking clips of the headlight assembly, and then extract them up and out of the assembly.

  • Pull the assembly forward to extract it. Disconnect the electrical harness connection(s) from the headlight(s) being removed.

  • Turn the base of the headlight(s) counterclockwise a quarter turn to remove the bulb(s) from the assembly. If you are removing the assembly, you must remove both the low- and high-beam wire harness connections and bulbs.
