How to Remove a Horn Button

If you have an older model vehicle with a horn button, and you are attempting to replace the steering wheel, you are going to need to remove the horn button to remove the steering wheel. The horn button can be removed in less than 10 minutes without too much trouble. Most horn buttons use a twist-style mounting with a spring on the back. You can save time and money by removing the horn button yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Shut off the engine and open the hood. Unfasten the negative battery cable of the vehicle from the battery post with an open-end wrench before attempting to remove the horn button.

  • Push in on the horn button and turn it counterclockwise to release the button from the clips on the steering wheel.

  • Pull the button away from the wheel. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws on the steering wheel behind the button that are holding the spring in place. Remove the horn button assembly from the vehicle.
