How to Change Daytime Running Lights in a Suburban

The daytime running lamp system on a Chevrolet Suburban does not use separate daytime running lamps like other vehicles. Instead, the daytime running lamps are simply the Suburban's high beam headlights operating at a reduced setting. Thus, to change the daytime running lights on a Suburban, you must change the vehicle's high beam bulbs. This is a simple procedure that requires only a 9005-type replacement bulb, a clean cloth and approximately 10 minutes of your time.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloth
  • Spare bulb
  • Turn off the Suburban's engine and open the hood.

  • Twist the two retaining pins on the headlight assembly inwards. Remove the pins.

  • Remove the headlight assembly from the vehicle by lifting it out. Disconnect the plug at the rear of the assembly by squeezing the plastic tabs and pulling it off.

  • Remove the smaller bulb socket by rotating it counterclockwise and pulling it out of the vehicle. This socket contains the high beam bulb.

  • Pull the high beam bulb out of the socket and use a clean cloth to install the new bulb. Place the bulb back into the socket and the socket back into the assembly.

  • Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reconnect the plug to the rear of the vehicle. Reattach the two retaining pins and close the hood.
