How to Replace a Transmission Cooler Line on a Venture Van

The transmission cooler line on a Chevy Venture van runs from the radiator to the transmission. Transmission fluid runs through the lines and mixes with coolant in the radiator. This cools down the fluid to a suitable temperature for starting the cycle through the engine once again. Replacing the transmission cooler lines is necessary whenever they have a leak because it could lead to reduced fluid levels. This repair requires only a few tools and about an hour of work.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 jack stands
  • Collection pan
  • 1/2 inch socket wrench
  • Socket wrench extension
  • Flare nut wrench
  • Funnel
  • 3 quarts transmission fluid
  • Park the Venture van on a level surface and wait about 30 minutes for the engine to cool completely. Raise the front end of the car up on a pair of jack stands to gain access to the underside of the engine.

  • Slide underneath the car to locate the transmission drain pan. This is a black, metal tank surrounded by eight bolts. It's positioned in the center of the engine, just off to the driver's side. Place a collection pan beneath the drain pan.

  • Attach the socket wrench extension tool to the 1/2 inch socket wrench. Use this tool to remove the drain bolt in the center of the transmission pan. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the fluid to drain completely from the pan. Replace the drain bolt.

  • Locate the cooler line which is a wide, vinyl hose that runs from the side of the transmission to the bottom of the radiator. Use a flare nut wrench to disconnect the nuts that attach the hose to both the transmission and the radiator. Replace the hose with the new cooler line. Use the old nuts to secure the hose.

  • Lower the car from the jack stands and pop the hood. Locate the transmission dipstick above the transmission drain pan. Pull it out and place a funnel into the metal tube. Pour in three quarts of transmission fluid. Replace the transmission dipstick and close the hood of your Venture.
