How to Replace the Ignition on a 2001 Chevy S10

The ignition, also called the ignition module, sends a signal from the battery to the starter and starter solenoid on your 2001 Chevy S-10. You can quickly test the module by turning on the headlights. If the headlights do not dim when you turn the ignition key, the ignition module is defective, and your 2001 Chevy S-10 won't start until you replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Tamper-proof Torx screwdriver
  • Awl or scribe
  • Remove the screws that secure the bottom steering column cover to the top cover using a screwdriver. Pull the top and bottom covers off the steering column.

  • Locate the ignition module. The key cylinder lock secures to the center of the module and there is a large wiring harness connected to it.

  • Pull up on the harness locks on each end of the harness, and then pull the harness out of the ignition module.

  • Remove the tamper-proof Torx screws holding the ignition module onto the steering column using a tamper-proof Torx screwdriver. You can get one of these screwdrivers at your local hardware or automotive parts store.

  • Place the ignition key into the ignition cylinder lock, and turn it to the "Auxiliary" position. This allows you to pull the lock cylinder halfway out of the ignition module.

  • Push in on the silver pin on the bottom of the ignition using an awl or a metal scribe, and pull the cylinder lock free from the ignition module.

  • Slide the ignition cylinder lock into the new ignition module. It will go in all of the way. Turn the key to the "Off" position, and remove it from the cylinder lock.

  • Secure the new ignition module to the steering column using the tamper-proof Torx screws and tamper-proof Torx screwdriver.

  • Plug the wiring harness into the ignition module, and push the locks down.

  • Place the top and bottom cover onto the steering column, and secure them using the screws and screwdriver.
