U-Haul Hitch Install Instructions

U-Haul will install a hitch onto your vehicle for a fee. If you ask, they will sell you the hitch for your vehicle and forgo installing it for you. This option saves you money and since U-Haul trailer hitch receivers are designed to fit your vehicle, installation utilizes existing holes in the frame. This makes the process very quick and simple.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Inspect the back half of the vehicle frame for a tow hook. If your vehicle has a tow hook, remove the four bolts that secure the tow hook to the underside of the frame using a socket and ratchet. The holes left by removing the two hooks are used to mount the new hitch. If your vehicle does not have a two hook, skip this step.

  • Slide the hitch under the rear of the vehicle and place it up against the frame. Line up the holes in the hitch with the holes in the frame. The use of a second person is helpful because they can hold up one side while you hold up the other.

  • Place the washer and lock washers onto the bolts provided with the hitch. Thread the bolts through the hitch and into the holes in the frame using your fingers. Tighten each bolt once you thread them all in with your fingers. Usually, there are four bolts for each side.
