How To Remove the Lighter Plug Socket for a 1995 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord has been available since 1976. In 1982, Honda brought the Accord to the United States, and it became the first Japanese vehicle to be built in America. The 1995 Honda Accord was developed with the choice of three engines; a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder, a 2.2-liter VTEC 4-cylinder and a 2.7-liter V-6. The lighter in the 1995 Honda Accord has become an outlet for accessories, such as cellphone chargers, satellite radio power providers and GPS system power units.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver or 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket
  • Open the hood on the 1995 Accord. Remove the positive battery cable, using a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket set to remove the harness nut.

  • Insert the ignition key into the keyhole, next to the shifter. This is a keyhole for performing maintenance on your 1995 Accord. Pull the parking brake lever upward to engage the parking brake lever. Put the vehicle in the farthest gear back on the shifter labeled "1".

  • Insert a flat head screwdriver between the side of the shifter column and the faceplate that holds the shifter column. Push the handle of the screwdriver downward to pop the faceplate up and off the center console. Push the faceplate backward as far as you can by hand.

  • Remove the ashtray by pulling it out of the dash and depressing the metal tongue at the top. The metal tongue is inside the ashtray and sticks out when you pull the ashtray out. Pushing the metal tongue down releases the ashtray from the dashboard.

  • Remove the two pilot screws from underneath the lip of the dashboard faceplate. The screws are just above the ashtray cutout and are facing downward. Use a small Phillips screwdriver or a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket to remove the faceplate pilot screws.

  • Insert a flat head screwdriver between the dash faceplate and the dashboard. Push the screwdriver handle away from the faceplate gently to shimmy the faceplate loose. The lighter will come out as well. The dash controls for the heater and the stereo will remain in the dashboard.

  • Turn the faceplate so that you can access the rear of the plate. Remove the electrical connectors from the rear of the lighter socket by hand. There are two plugs on the rear of the socket. Insert a flat head screwdriver into the holding slide clip that holds the lighter in the dashboard. Remove the sliding clip by pushing it sideways until it releases from the lighter socket. Remove the lighter socket from the faceplate from the back and through the front of the faceplate.
