How to Remove a Standard Transmission From a 98 Chevy S-10

The manual transmission of the 1998 Chevy S-10 uses energy from the engine and allows you to convert it into usable power. The transmission uses gearing to step up the output of the engine, and allows you to drive the vehicle faster. The transmission is one of the most complex units in an automobile and whenever something goes bad inside the transmission, you usually have to remove it to complete repairs.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps
  • Wheel blocks
  • Socket set
  • Drive your S-10 onto a set of ramps, and secure the parking brake. Place wheel blocks behind the rear tires.

  • Remove the bolts that secures the rear driveshaft flange to the rear differential bulkhead using a socket and ratchet. Pull the rear drive shaft down, and then pull it away from the transmission to remove the driveshaft spline form the tail of the transmission housing.

  • Disconnect the shifter linkage from the driver's side of the transmission housing using a socket and ratchet.

  • Remove the bolts that secure the transmission to the transmission cross member using a socket and ratchet.

  • Remove the bolts that secure the transmission to the engine block using a socket and ratchet.

  • Pull the transmission backwards until it clears the transmission cross member, and then remove it from under the S-10.
