How to Remove Baked on Plastic From Chrome

If you ride a motorcycle with forward controls, you have likely melted plastic or rubber from the soles of your shoes onto the chrome exhaust pipe. When the plastic or rubber cools off, it becomes very hard. Although the plastic does not damage the chrome, it looks unsightly and takes away from the appearance of your bike. You can quickly remove this plastic or rubber from your chrome and being back the "like new" appearance of your exhaust pipes.

Things You'll Need

  • Acetone
  • Cotton towels
  • Turn the motorcycle on and run it for approximately 10 minutes. Allow the motorcycle to cool down until you can touch the pipes. They should be hot but not scalding.

  • Wet a cotton towel with acetone. If you use fingernail polish remover, make sure it has acetone in it. Many brands no longer use acetone.

  • Wipe the pipe with the acetone wetted rag starting with the outside edges of the plastic working you way in. The acetone will not wipe the plastic off with one swipe of the cotton towel. It takes hard work to break the plastic down. You may also need to use a thumbnail to help chip the plastic off. Repeat steps two and three until all of the plastic and rubber come off.
