How to Install Bilstein Shocks

The shock absorbers on your vehicle should be replaced every 75,000 miles. They should always be replaced in pairs. Bilstein shocks are available for almost any vehicle or custom application and can be purchased online or at most auto parts stores. Because shocks are held in place by two bolts, you can replace them yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug nut wrench
  • Hydraulic jack
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Place the vehicle in park and apply the emergency parking brake.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on one of the tires with a lug nut wrench. Slide a jack under the vehicle. If you do not know where to place the jack to lift the vehicle, refer to the owner's manual for proper jack lifting instructions. Lift the vehicle, finish taking off the lug nuts and remove the tire from the hub.

  • Locate the mounting bolts that secure the shock in place. They are usually held in place by two bolts; your application may have three or four. Remove these bolts by placing a ratchet and socket onto the head of the bolt. Slide a wrench onto the nut on the back side to keep the nut from spinning. Turn the ratchet back and forth until the nut is removed. Repeat this step until all the bolts have been removed.

  • Grasp the shock and pull it from the vehicle. You may need to press down to remove it from the brackets.

  • Place the Bilstein shock into the brackets. Align the mounting holes and secure it to the vehicle using the existing bolts and nuts. Tighten them using a ratchet and socket.

  • Reinstall the tire back onto the hub by aligning the wheel studs with the wheel. Thread the lug nuts onto the wheel studs and tighten them using a lug nut wrench.

  • Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the hydraulic jack.

  • Repeat these steps to replace the remaining shock absorbers.
