How to Replace the Bushings for the Anti-Sway Bar on a 2003 Ford F-250

The 2003 Ford F-250 3/4-ton pickup is equipped with a front anti-sway bar. Anti-sway bars help vehicle stability by linking the left and right suspension components together. When the F-250 goes into a turn, the suspension on the outside of the turn compresses. The anti-sway bar transfers some of this force to the inside suspension, thereby decreasing body roll and lateral forces on the outside tire. The anti-sway bar is attached to the suspension and the frame with rubber bushings. Over time, these bushings wear out and need to be replaced. Superior polyurethane bushings are available and provide superior performance.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Anti-sway-bar link and bushing kit (polyurethane recommended)
  • Torque wrench
  • Park the F-250 on level ground and set the parking brake.

  • Raise the front of the F-250 with a jack and support with jack stands on each side of the frame.

  • Locate where the anti-sway bar attaches to the lower control arms on each side of the F-250. You will see a rod, or link, with rubber bushings at each end that connects the ends of the anti-sway bar to the lower control arms. Remove the nut from the bottom of the link bolt where it attaches to the lower control arm. Remove the nut, washer and rubber insulator. Note the arrangement of these parts for reassembly.

  • Pull the link bolt up through the top of the link, above the anti-sway bar end. Remove the washer and rubber insulator. Remove the link from between the anti-sway-bar end and the lower control arm. Note that there is a washer and rubber insulator at each end of the link. Remember this arrangement for reassembly. Remove the links from both ends of the anti-sway bar.

  • Locate the two brackets that hold the anti-sway bar to the underside of the frame. Remove the two bolts on each bracket. Remove the bracket and the two rubber bushings from the anti-sway bar. The rear of the bushing has a slit in it so you can just pull it off the anti-sway bar.

  • Install the two frame bushings on the anti-sway bar. The slit in the bushings go against the frame. Install the brackets and bolts. Just snug down the bolts for now.

  • Install the links at each end of the anti-sway bar. You will have the link, with a washer at each end and a rubber insulator on top of each washer. These go between the anti-sway bar and the lower control arm. With a washer and insulator installed on the link bolt, slide the bolt down through the anti-sway bar, the link and the lower control arm. Install the final insulator, washer and nut on the underside of the lower control arm. Torque the nut to 15-21 ft.-lbs., holding the head of the bolt with a wrench.

  • Torque the frame bracket bolts to 19-25 ft.-lbs. Raise the F-250, remove the jack stands and lower the truck to the ground.
